Project Description

Design Build-one of largest drinking water ultraviolet (UV) disinfection facilities in North America. Owned by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, the new Tesla treatment facility is capable of treating 315 MGD for the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct Water System. The UV disinfection system provides advanced disinfection to meet the requirements of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule. Workscope includes design, process piping, civil, mechanical, structural, and electrical and control services, and architecture building. The operations building is designed to obtain LEED® certification. The new facility was delivered on a fast track and was operational by early 2011. The new Tesla Water Treatment Facility provides drinking water to over 2.5 million people in the Metropolitan San Francisco area.

Tesla Portal Disinfection Station, which replaced the existing hypochlorite station with a new, 14,000-square-foot Chemical Process Building containing disinfection and related equipment. The purpose of this project is to have a chlorination facility that would meet current seismic-safety, fire and building-code standards. The old facility, built in 1937, does not meet those standards. This project also includes a 3,500-square-foot Office/Control Building.

Advanced Disinfection Station, a new, 20,000-square-foot building, in which Hetch Hetchy water would flow past a series of ultraviolet (UV) light arrays. (Exposure to UV radiation kills or renders inactive micro-organisms in water.) This facility helps the SFPUC meet new US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) requirements for Cryptosporidium disinfection. Cryptosporidium, a parasite commonly found in rivers and lakes can cause gastrointestinal disease, but UV treatment effectively eliminates this parasite.
